I don't know what it is about for you, but for me, a Shawl evokes romantic images, combined with softness, heat, comfort and elegance, that you can especially find in the famous Russian Shawls.
At start a purely functional clothes accessory to protect yourself from the cold, the shawl evolved with time in a mode accessory combining elegance, softness, heat and comfort.

The evolution of the Russian Shawls
Today, shawls don't satisfy themselves any more with their utilitarian aspect.
Thanks to the techniques evolutions and the aesthetic customers requirements, Russian Shawls became a necessary accessory of mode.
From the beginning of the 18th century, Russia began a broad shawl production, to serve the request provoked by the fashion Kashmir Shawls.
After having taken as a starting point the cashmere processes, the Russians adapted the manufacturing processes to their self know-how, found new matters and developed a typically Slavic style from which one of the most representative models is the shawl "Russian Beauty", universally appreciated.

The combed sheep wool was used rather than the Tibetan goat down. This matter is available in greater quantity, is better worked by mechanical processes, and after treatment, its softness quality, its durability and the colour permanency are excellent.
As it was not possible to carry out a sufficient production with a manual embroidered patterns, the Russians adopted successfully the manufactoring processes of the Gobelins tapestries to manufacture the shawls.
They also adopted floral patterns traditionally used by Caucasus people, which, stylized, simplified and realized with bright colors, marry perfectly with a empty center, surrounded by a river of fringes out of wool or better, out of silk.
To make a gift, or a self pleasure, a Russian Shawl will never be wrong.
The women adore them because they marry well with all outfits, and men offer them with pleasure as a gift which will always be appreciated.
